YASMIN HANG WINS HOME RACE FOR FALDO SERIES TITLE AT GOODWOOD
(Chichester, UK – 12th August 2021) Talented junior, Yasmin Hang, celebrated a dramatic win at her home club, Golf at Goodwood, after a final hole birdie secured the Faldo Series England South II Championship overall title.
Over 90 girls and boys teed up at Golf at Goodwood to enjoy a quintessential British challenge, with the regal Kennels clubhouse and low-flying Spitfires framing the juniors’ hunt for a prestigious invite to the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final this October.
Despite stalling on the first day due to heavy rain, Goodwood staged a racing championship with drama right up to until the last as the five age category winners were separated by just five shots.
Producing a moment of magic under pressure, it was home member, Yasmin Hang, whose 15ft putt dropped on the 18th for birdie, to claim her sole position under par and with it the overall championship and Girls U21.
Following the winning putt, England South II champion, Yasmin Hang, said, “I’m really happy, that was the first putt I have holed all day really! It feels really good especially on my home course as well, although I did feel a little pressure! The course was immaculate so thanks to Goodwood for hosting and to all the greenkeepers.”
Chloe Williamson rounded off the Girls drama as she claimed the Girls U16s category by two shots.
In the boys’ categories, two playoffs were needed to decide the recipients of the Europe Grand Final invites. In the U16, Monty Holcombe, builds on his Faldo Series form following up a third at Kedleston Park with a win this week. His round of the week, 68, on the final day, forced a playoff with Reid Trophy runner up Charlie Croker, however it was Holcombe’s clutch birdie putt on the first playoff hole that ultimately sealed the victory.
In the Boys U18, Rio Saigal’s enthralling final holes threatened his title, with a much needed par save on the 17th and a bogey on the 18th guiding him into a playoff. However, much like Holcombe, Saigal was able to steady the ship and produced a magnificent birdie on the first playoff hole to claim the U18s. Whilst Ben Clarke’s nervous wait proved worthwhile as his early clubhouse lead in the U21s ended up out of reach from the closing pack.
Speaking after the event, Matthew Faldo, Director of the Faldo Series, said: “It has been a thoroughly enjoyable week in a magnificent setting, especially with the theatre of the Goodwood estate and Spitfires providing an exciting stage, which the standard of golf certainly lived up to with one of the tightest finishes I can remember in the Series.
“Congratulations to Yasmin, a perfect putt on the 18th was a spectacular way to claim the title, summing up a great couple of days. Also, to age category winners, Ben, Rio, Monty and Chloe, who put up a great challenge for the overall title and we look forward to seeing them at the Grand Final later this year.”
The Faldo Series will continue to celebrate its 25th year of competition with a visit to Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club for the England North Girls and Boys Championship next week on 16th August.
