Van Der Weele triumphs in Netherlands play-off

25 July 2016

25 July 2016: Kiet Van Der Weele defeated Bob Geurts in a play-off at de Herkenbosche in The Netherlands Championship. Geurts fired a birdie on the last of his regulation 36 holes to force a play-off but Van Der Weele was unperturbed as his par on the first play-off hole claimed overall victory at the seventh Netherlands Championship.

“I am really pleased with this win.” Commented 16-year-old Van Der Weele. “Tee to green my game was not as good as I would have liked but my short game and putting were great which really saved me. I have heard so many good things about past Grand Finals and I am really happy that I have earnt my spot this year.”

The de Herkenbosche course provided a thorough and varied test for the Dutch, Belgian and German competitors. Heat was a key factor on a stifling day in the South-East of the Netherlands. Van Der Weele was made to sweat for overall victory but enjoyed a comfortable six shot margin in his Under-16 division.

Geurts will have the consolation of joining Van Der Weele at the 20th Faldo Series Grand Final; as he was victorious in his Under-18 category by five shots over Dane Cvetkovic. Geurts’ 72 on the second round was the lowest score of the competition. He will now line up in his second Faldo Series Grand Final.

Aydan Verdonk edged out Joep Slagt and Laurence Lichtenvoort Cats by a single shot to win the Boys’ Under-21 and book passage to his first appearance in a Grand Final. Verdonk shot rounds of 78 & 76 to win the fiercely contested category.

The Girls’ Under-21 was won by Daphne Van Houten whose rounds of 75 & 76 were sufficient to claim victory by three shots over Pasqualle Coffa. Chantal Paassen mastered the Girls’ Under-16 with rounds of 77 & 79. Paassen was five clear of compatriot Sophie Wiegant. Both Van Houten and Paassen will appear in their first Grand Final when they play at Stoke by Nayland in October 2016.

Sir Nick Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood was on hand to conduct a clinic with the young golfers. The competition was marked out by the great generosity and support from de Herkenbosche’s members and volunteers.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
