Talbot triumphs at Faldo Series Wales Championship

12 July 2018

Burry Port, Wales (12 July): Alex Talbot claimed the title at the Faldo Series Wales Championship after a gripping three-way playoff. Talbot held off Emilie Lewis and Harry David Frazer to win on the third additional hole at Ashburnham Golf Club. Talbot is rewarded with a place in the 22nd Faldo Series Grand Final.

In very dry conditions with a swirling wind Talbot, Lewis and Frazer finished on one-under-par after three days and a playoff was required to find an overall winner. With Grand Final places at stake, the contest between Talbot and Frazer also served as the Under-21 category decider. After Emilie Lewis fell at the firstplayoff hole, the two boys still standing both made par on the second additional hole. On to the third, and Talbot birdied the par-3 1st hole to edge out his worthy competitor.

Talbot’s last day 68 on this very testing Ashburnham course was the round of the week and a highly impressive way to force a playoff. He’d put himself into a good position with his earlier rounds of 75 and 72 and he’ll be delighted to have not only played so well on the final day but also to keep his poise in a tense playoff.

Reaching his first Grand Final, the Boys’ Under-18 division was won by Connor Jones of Wales. Jones held off Swiss national Joel Birrer by five shots as the pair headed into day three on level pegging but Jones negotiated the testing links course with aplomb to seal the win.

The Boy’s Under-16’s featured a battle between Jordanian Shergo Al Kurdi and Wales’ Abe Forsyth. Forsyth opened with a fine 71 and followed up with a 73 to put the pressure on the rest of his competitors. Al Kurdi stayed in touch with a 74 and a 75 before a brilliant last day 71 granted him victory as Forsyth dropped back to second position with a 78. Al Kurdi who played well at the Faldo Series England South Championship will be glad to convert his play in to victory as he will now play in his first Grand Final.

Emilie Lewis is building a very strong Faldo Series record. In 2017 Lewis won the Girls’ Under-16 division and she proved herself again in 2018. She played exceptionally well to win the Girl’s Under-21 division by a huge margin. Although she missed out in the overall playoff she will be very satisfied with a great three days at Ashburnham. Her rounds of 76, 72 and 76 were a fine reward for her efforts and she will once again compete in a Grand Final.

In the Girls’ Under-16 division Kasumi Tran charged out of the blocks on day one with a very tidy 72. Having built a sizeable cushion she was able to play conservatively over the next two days. Her lead was not threatened as she closed out the category win with two rounds of 78. Tran will now play in her first Grand Final.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
