Sundborg sails to victory at Old Fold Manor

7 July 2016

07 July 2016: Isle of Wight star Jordan Sundborg held off a formidable field to win the England South Championship at Old Fold Manor by one shot. Sundborg shot 67, 72 & 73 to win through to his first Faldo Series Grand Final.

“The course was in fantastic condition with exceptionally thick rough so I really focused on hitting the fairways and greens this week,” commented Sundborg. “The greens were excellent and I had a good game plan not to wrong side myself on my approaches. Thankfully this strategy paid off. This is my fourth attempt at making a Grand Final; I narrowly missed out a couple of times so I am incredibly glad to make it this time round.”

The players experienced glorious conditions at the Hertfordshire course. Victory and a Grand Final spot was not all on offer at Old Fold Manor. The club offered free membership to all players who made the 36-hole cut, free of charge for a year.

Faldo Series veteran Cameron Long was in fine form to finish runner-up in the Under-21 category, just one shot back from Sundborg. A hole-in-one on the 176 yard par 3, 14th was one of many highlights for Long.

In the Under-18 category Arron Edwards-Hill won by three shots to gain a place in his first Grand Final. The young Chelmsford member shot rounds of 70, 69 & 74 to hold off Ryan Smith. Smith had profited from a superb last day hole-in-one on the par 3, 10th.

Harry Goddard has enjoyed considerable success with the Faldo Series and he showcased his talents once more over the three days. Goddard won his Under-16 category in the Grand Final last year in Germany and secured a place in the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final as a result. Goddard started in style with a first round of 69 and held off Michael Gilbert by three shots on the final day.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
