Robinson wins Faldo Series Scotland Championship

28 July 2016

28 July 2016: Brad Robinson (Close House) claimed the prized scalp of the Faldo Series Scotland Championship at the Dukes in St Andrews. The 19-year-old Englishman shot rounds of 73 and 73 before finishing with a brilliant 70 to win by two shots. The win over a strong international field guarantees a qualification spot in the twentieth Faldo Series Grand Final.

The players battled strong winds for much of the week but glorious sunshine did break out on the final day at one of the finest heathland championship courses in the British Isles. Robinsons’ three rounds were an exhibition in how to approach the tough White Course in tricky conditions. Victory in the Under-21 category was never in doubt, despite the hugely talented field that trailed him.

Robinson did need to maintain full concentration to confirm the overall victory as Australian Josh Armstrong (The Lakes) pursued him bravely throughout the week. Armstrong’s fine efforts were rewarded as he too qualified for the Grand Final. The young Aussie won his Under-18 category by four shots with rounds of 75, 72 and 71.

There was more antipodean success as New Zealand Markopolo Fullepp claimed the Under-16 category by three shots. The SCGA Junior South member held off Scot Alex Simpson (Strathmore) to claim his first Grand Final experience.

The girls’ championship was held on the red course and it was Daphne Van Houten (De Haenen) who dealt with the challenging conditions the best. The 18-year-old Dutchwoman fired rounds of 75, 77 and 77 to hold off Carinne Taylor (Nairn).

In the Under-16 division Scot Louise Duncan (West Kilbride) produced some high quality golf to confirm that each category was claimed by a different nationality. Duncan dominated from start-to-finish and like Van Houten will now line up in her first Grand Final.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
