Nguyen Thao My defends Faldo Series Vietnam Championship title

20 August 2015

Thua Thien Hue Province, Vietnam (August 20): Nguyen Thao My’s stock continued to rise as she successfully defended her title in the eighth Faldo Series Vietnam Championship.

Once again displaying her liking for the acclaimed Faldo Design course at Laguna Lang Co near Danang, the Vietnamese teenager sped to a runaway 12-stroke triumph in the seventh leg of the 2015-16 Faldo Series Asia season.

Last year, My posted a 36-hole total of 147 to win by four shots at the venue which is rated as one of the best new courses in Asia and has played a pivotal role in the development of Vietnam’s Central Coast region as a major golf and tourism destination.

This year she improved by three strokes, courtesy of rounds of 70 and 74. Her rivals were left trailing distantly in the wake of the girl who has been studying at the American International School in Bangkok and training at the Green Valley Golf Club.

My’s reward for her Laguna Lang Co victory is a return trip to Mission Hills China next March for the 10th anniversary Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, to be hosted by Nick Faldo.

There, My will be determined to continue the dramatic progress she has made over the past 12 months during which time she has established herself as one of the country’s brightest golfing prospects.

At the ninth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final, My finished a respectable ninth place in the Girls’ Under-16 category, breaking 80 in all three rounds.

She subsequently spearheaded the female Vietnamese team in the 28th edition of the Southeast Asian Games at Singapore’s Sentosa Golf Club. Again she performed commendably in securing a tie for 11th individually.

She then had the distinction of claiming a top-10 finish in the Girls’ 15-18 section at the Optimist International Junior Golf Championships at PGA National Resort and Spa, Palm Beach Gardens in the United States.

Six-time Major champion Faldo, Britain’s most successful ever golfer, said: “Congratulations to Nguyen Thao My on retaining her title at the Faldo Series Vietnam Championship.

“I followed her for a few holes in the ninth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final and was impressed with what I saw. With a little more tournament experience, I’m sure she will continue to go from strength to strength.

“Based on her results in recent months there’s no reason why she should not be challenging for top female honours at Mission Hills next March.”

Along with My, Dao Phuc Hung (Boys’ Under-18 winner), Nguyen Phuong Khang (Boys’ Under-15 winner), Hanako Kawasaki (Girls’ Under-18 runner-up) and Ngo Le Hoang Nam Phuong (Girls’ Under-15 winner) had the satisfaction of qualifying for next year’s World Amateur Golf Ranking event in China.

Supported by The R&A and Mission Hills and endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Confederation, the 2015-16 Faldo Series Asia campaign stretches over 11 months and will include a minimum of 21 events in 17 countries including, for the first time, Australia.

Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, expanding to Asia in 2006.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching more than 7,000 golfers each year. Past winners include Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at last year’s Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
