Lewis the leading lady at Faldo Series Midlands Championship

31 August 2018

Staffordshire, United Kingdom (31 August): Ebonie Lewis held off Emily Brennan by two shots to claim the honours at the Faldo Series Girls’ Championship at Trentham. Lewis fired rounds of 70, 76 and 70 to claim the victory and a place in her first Faldo Series Grand Final.

Champion Lewis commented: ‘I really grinded the result out so it was very pleasing to get over the line. I’ve played with Emily so I know how good she is – especially here at Trentham her home club and I felt that pressure. It’s satisfying to win under pressure like that which hopefully will stand me in good stead at the Grand Final.’

Conditions were pristine all three days as the sun shone on the challenging course at Trentham in Staffordshire. Six qualifying spots for the 22nd Faldo Series Grand Final were at stake as some of the best young golfers battled it out on in the last regular competition of the Faldo Series season.

The girls playing at Trentham will have been delighted that The R&A recently unveiled a new Women in Golf Charter as part of the organisation’s drive to increase the number of women and girls participating in golf. The competition in Trentham illustrated sharply how highly skilled the leading girls are and how important it is to help support growth in the girls game.

Ebonie Lewis started very well with a 70 and it left much of the field scrambling in the face of such quality. Emily Brennan fired back however and took a one shot lead ahead of Gemma Allman and Lewis heading into day three. Emily Brennan looked to be the slight favourite - on her own turf – Brennan had recently hit a 66 at the Trentham Club Championships.

Allman and Brennan fought to the last and recorded very credible scores but Lewis surged at just the right time and with a ruthless quality to claim a deserved victory. Brennan carded 72, 73 and 73 and Allman scored 74, 72 and 73. With six spots available Lewis, Brennan and Allman will head to Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club (AESGC) in the United Arab Emirates in November. It will be a second consecutive trip for Allman and Brennan who competed in 2017.

Sophie Johnson will be pleased with her form as she secured the fourth spot with scores of 73, 77 and 75. There was a battle for 5th place and it eventually finished honours even as Thalia Kirkby finished level with Annabel Pitts. All three will enjoy a new golfing experience with their first Grand Final trip to UAE in November.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
