Lamb dishes up win at Pleasington

14 April 2015

14 April 2015: Joey Lamb of Wilpshire Golf Club fired a final round of 70 to win the Faldo Series England North Championship by two shots at Pleasington Golf Club.  After rounds of 68 and 71 in fine conditions to take a two shot lead in to the final day, Joey stayed clear of the chasing pack on the final day as he claimed victory and a place in the Faldo Series Grand Final.

The young golfers faced a thorough examination of their skills on the varied Pleasington course, a new venue for the Faldo Series. It was certainly a happy hunting ground for the Lamb family as Sophie, cousin of Joey, prevailed in the Girls’ division by five shots. Sophie (Clitheroe G.C.) was on top of her game to craft a huge nine shot lead going in to the final day which provided a great cushion to hold off nearest challenger Ellie Goodall (Selby).

Chris Handy (South Moor) couldn’t quite overhaul Joey Lamb to win overall victory but he did claim the Boys’ Under 18 division by a sizeable margin of five shots. His scores of 74, 67 and 70 were a good return on a course that punished imprecision. Like the Lamb cousins he is rewarded with a place in the Faldo Series Grand Final.

Tom Cleaton (Rugby) enjoyed a comfortable win in his U16 category. He was able to canter to an eight shot win with scores of 71, 70 and 79. Like the other category winners he created a great platform in the first few days before doing his upmost to keep the error count low on the tougher final day.

Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, expanding to Asia in 2006.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
