Griffiths triumphant at Faldo Series Germany

4 August 2017

4 August 2017: Niklas Jason Griffiths played some terrific golf to win the eighth Faldo Series Germany Championship at A-ROSA Scharmützelsee. Griffiths fired rounds of 71, 70 and 69 on the acclaimed Faldo Course to win the competition by four shots. Griffiths will now play in his first ever Faldo Series Grand Final.

"I am really excited about my success here at the great tournament on the challenging Faldo Course. I look very much forward to the Grand Final and can't wait to meet Sir Nick Faldo personally - what a great chance to be a golfing legend!" – Overall Champion Niklas Jason Griffiths.

Intermittent showers interrupted some good conditions at A-ROSA Scharmützelsee where for the first time WAGR points were available to the players. The Faldo Course presents a thorough strategical challenge and it was a challenge Griffiths met with aplomb. Georg Hartmann and Noah-Elia Auner fired superb low rounds on day one but Griffiths was the most consistent in the field over the three days and a deserved winner.

While Griffiths claimed the Boys’ Under-21 Category by a huge margin the Under-18 division was a much closer affair. Nikolai Schaffrath has plenty of form in the Faldo Series and he was involved in a fierce contest with Georg Hartmann. Hartmann held the lead until the morning of the final when Schaffrath edged to victory. Schaffrath will now once again take part in Faldo Series Grand Final.

The Boys’ Under-16 had drama too. Felix Krammer and Christian Gillitzer were locked in a high quality battle for the division. Krammer opened the competition with an Eagle at the first and he kept on producing the goods throughout the three days. His rounds of 71, 71 and 72 were enough to hold off Gillitzer by a single shot and secure qualification for his first Grand Final.

Miriam Emmert was in lovely touch as she won her Under-21 division by five shots. Linda Sophie Trockel is a proven performer and Nina Hoffkes raised the stakes with a run of four consecutive birdies but Emmert forced them to settle for second and third respectively. Emmert fired rounds of 72, 72 and 73. The second round featured eighteen consecutive Pars – a remarkable feat to avoid bogeys on a course laden with traps. It will be Emmert’s first experience of a Grand Final.

The final category – the Girls’ Under-16s – was won by Lisa Marie Schumacher. Schumacher controlled the contest and won by a seven-shot margin. Danielle Modder was forced to settle for second. Schumacher had a day three wobble on the back nine but recovered nicely and her scores of 75, 75 and 74 reflected a good reward on the Faldo Course. Schumacher will head to her first Grand Final full of confidence.

Sir Nick Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood was on hand to work with 30 local school children ranging in ages from 5-13, many trying golf for the first time. A number of the young talents will hopefully compete in the main tournament one day. Keith also conducted lessons throughout the week with the players.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
