Butler serves up win at England South Championship

6 July 2017

6 July 2017: Harry Butler closed with a 70 to seal the win at Old Fold Manor in the Faldo Series England South Championship by three shots. Butler held off strong challenges from South African Gaelen Trew and Englishman Paul Waring to win the 54-hole event. Butler has now qualified for the 21st Faldo Series Grand Final.

Harry Boyle set the day one pace with a quality 68 but on day two Butler pounced to seize control with a superb 67 in firm and fast conditions. The 67 was perhaps made more remarkable for the two bogeys on the final two holes. Butler held a four shot lead going into the final day and never looked like losing it. Galeen Trew played beautifully – going out in 31, the lowest nine holes of the week – but left himself too much to do to catch classy Butler.

‘The first two rounds I holed every putt I looked at, which gave me some breathing room going in to today. I continued to focus on hitting fairways and greens and to keep the round as simple as possible. I felt the pressure on the back nine and thankfully my short game was really sharp as I had a number of par saves that kept my momentum going. I am so happy I managed to seal the win and get to my first Grand Final.’ Harry Butler – Overall winner.

The three front-runners were in the Under-21 category but Under-18 competitor Arron Edwards-Hill was only a shot back and had blasted his division away. Edwards-Hill fired 70, 71 and 70 to win his division by a healthy five shots over Owen Benson. Benson’s final day 68 was in vain as Edwards-Hill had found his rhythm to build a big cushion. Edwards-Hill will travel to his second Faldo Series Grand Final.

Max Hopkins claimed a deserved victory in the Under-16 category. Hopkins charged out of the blocks with a 69 before suffering a poor second day. A sluggish start to the third day was remedied with three birdies in the final five holes to get the talented Hertfordshire prospect across the line. Oliver Dickman and George Fricker were left ruing lost opportunities as they finished four shots behind. Hopkins, like Butler, will now attend his first ever Faldo Series Grand Final.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
