Williams aces England South Championship
02 July 2015: George Williams of Knebworth Golf Club won a fine victory in a tough field at Old Fold Manor to claim the Faldo Series England South Championship by four shots. The 20-year-old shot a wonderful 67 on the first day and followed it up with two rounds of 72 to earn the title and his third Grand Final invitation.
“I’ve struggled for form in recent weeks but the opening round of 67 filled me with confidence and I feel like I’ve turned a corner” Said Williams. “I really enjoyed the previous Grand Final at The Greenbrier so it’s obviously fantastic to qualify again and I’m looking forward to another great experience.”
The England South Championship at Old Fold Manor has drawn a high quality field every year since it first hosted the Faldo Series in 2012; perhaps due to the hospitable nature of the club, and this year was certainly no exception. Williams won the Under-18 category at Old Fold Manor in 2013, the Under-21 category in 2014 and completed the set with this year’s overall victory.
There were more familiar names competing in the Under-18 division; 16-year-old Arrun Singh-Brar of Foxhills pipped Louis Lazarus (Romford) by two shots to qualify for his second Grand Final. Arrun has represented England Boys Golf and is the younger cousin of past Faldo Series champion Jack Singh-Brar. Harry Goddard (Hanbury Manor) took down the Under-16 category by two shots, a second day 69 proving crucial. 15-year-old Harry will gain his first taste of a Faldo Series Grand Final this year.
The Girls’ division was also distinguished by quality; 18-year-old Lauren Horsford (Wimbledon Park) withstood pressure form Penelope Brown (Worthing) to claim the Under-21 title and a place in her second Grand Final. The last Grand Final spot went to Lily May Humphreys (Channels). The 13-year-old was dominant in the Under-16 section and will line up in her first Final.
Recognised as the only global amateur series for boys and girls, the Faldo Series was established in 1996, expanding to Asia in 2006.
Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
