18 August 2015: Jan Szmidt demolished the field at Gradi Golf Club in Brzeźno to win the Faldo Series Poland Championship by seven shots. The young Pole opened with a 72 on day one before going up a level with superb rounds of 65 and 64. His exploits earned him a place in the Faldo Series Grand Final – to be held in Germany on 29th September.

“My wedge game was very strong all week, when hitting in to these small greens it was very important to have this part of my game under control” said overall champion Jan Szmidt. “I putted well these last two days which shows in my scores.  I have been to Brazil and Northern Ireland for Grand Final’s in the past and can’t wait to add Germany to that list.  I really enjoyed the last two so it will be great to be back and meet Sir Nick again.”

Szmidt made a narrow course look easy as he strolled to 12-under par over three rounds to book a spot in his third Grand Final. The next best score was a remarkable seven shots back as Harry Konig played brilliantly for an aggregate of five-under par to take the runners-up spot both overall and in the Under-21 category.

There was a seven shot margin in the Under-18 category too as Slovakian Adam Sangala qualified for his first Grand Final. The trend extended to the Under-16 section as German Laurids Lohr’s swept to victory by nine shots, qualifying for his first Grand Final in the process.

The Girls’ section was a different tale as Julia Korus prevailed through a four-way scrap to win by one shot in the Under-21 division. The last Grand Final qualifying spot went to Dorota Zalewska, she fought off fierce competition to win the Under-16 category by two shots. Off the course the players benefited from time with Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood. Keith assisted the players and conducted clinics for the duration of the week.

The event at Gradi Golf Club was a truly international affair with competitors hailing from Poland, Germany, England, Slovakia, UAE, Czech Republic and Ukraine. The Poland Championship was restored to the Faldo Series calendar in 2014 after a five year absence. The 2015 tournament represented one of the last opportunities for young golfers to gain a place in the Faldo Series Grand Final.
