Robson savours Faldo Series success in Sussex
25 April 2013: Thomas Robson won the third Faldo Series UK Championship of the 2013 season with a course record-equalling final-round 67 at Royal Ashdown Forest in Sussex. The 20-year-old from Weymouth Golf Club in Dorset finished two shots clear of 2010 finalist Marco Penge (Worthing) who won the Boys’ Under-16 division.
“I was really nervous towards the end but I kept going and I’m delighted to have won,” said an elated Robson who qualifies for the 17th Faldo Series Grand Final, a 54-hole event hosted by six-time Major Champion Sir Nick Faldo. “I’ve been working very hard with my coach Dan Frost all winter and it’s great to see my efforts being rewarded.”
17-year-old Cameron Long (Drayton Park), winner of the Boys’ Under-16 division at the Grand Final in 2011, booked his place in another final thanks to victory in a three-way play-off. Long put his approach shot to two feet on the first extra hole and rolled in the birdie putt to capture the Boys’ Under-18s.
Two other age-group winners heading to the World Amateur Golf Ranking event are Amber Chana from Foxhills (Girls’ Under-16), who also came through a play-off, and another 2010 finalist Kyra Horlock from Broadstone (Girls’ Under-21).
Supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and the European Tour, the 2013 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 14 countries including six in England plus others in Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Chile, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Austria, Wales, Brazil, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia and Greece.
Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
In September 2013, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.
