25 August 2017: Pavol Mach went supersonic to claim the Faldo Series Slovakia Championship by one shot at Black Stork Golf Resort. The 16-year-old Slovakian fired rounds of 76-70-71 to claim victory and a place in his second Faldo Series Grand Final.

With the stunning backdrop of the High Tatras the weather at Black Stork can be unpredictable. Torrential downpours leading into the event left the regular front nine unplayable. The competition therefore took place on holes 10-18 and therefore the additional 9 holes at Black Stork were utilised. The poor weather conditions leading in did not dampen the spirits of the competitors as the renowned warm hospitality of the Slovakian hosts lifted the mood.

Faldo Series stalwart Jakub Hrinda came out firing on all cylinders as he found two Eagles on the first two days to set up a two-shot lead over Mach heading into the final day. It was the Under-16 competitor Pavol Mach who found something extra in the final round however. Mach went out in 38 before roaring into life on the back nine and finding a marvellous 33 to beat Jakub Hrinda to overall victory. Mach played at Stoke-By-Nayland in the 2016 Faldo Series Grand Final and now head to Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting and Golf Club for the 2017 edition.

Although Jakub Hrinda missed out on overall victory he was the worthy victor in his Under-18 division by five shots. Hrinda’s success in Faldo Series tournaments has led him around the world and he will now head to his sixth Grand Final after rounds of 72, 72 and 74. Slovakian compatriot David Turlik and Czech national Lukas Sitniansky both threatened but Hrinda was not going to relinquish his grip on the division. He will take additional confidence into the Grand Final having tasted victory at venue AESGC previously.

The final Boys’ category – the Under-21s – was won by Miroslav Gordan of Slovakia. His rounds of 77, 77 and 73 were sufficient to sweep home by six shots and claim a place in his first Grand Final. Czech national Jan Cernohorsky showed great potential but was unable to catch Gordan and settled for second place.

The Girls’ Under-21 division was won by Czech national Tereza Kozeluhova by two shots. Kozeluhova fired 72, 75 and 72 to fend off the strong challenge of Alexandra Patakova. Although the margin stayed slight throughout the three days, Kozeluhova was in control of the contest and will be buoyed by her poise under pressure. She will now prepare for second Faldo Series Grand Final.

The final category was won in style by Patricie Mackova. Mackova finished just a single shot from overall victor Pavol Mach as she dominated the Girls’ Under-16 division. She built an enormous lead on the first two days and was two shots ahead of all others – boys and girls. She wasn’t able to quite keep up with Mach but she easily sealed her category by a mighty ten shots. Mackova’s scorecard read 71, 71 and 76 and she will now attend her first ever Grand Final at AESGC.

Sir Nick Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood worked with the players throughout the week to help the young golfers make the most of their opportunity. Keith also had the privilege of working with the next generation as local schoolchildren attended clinics.

Today, 40 Faldo Series tournaments take place in 30-plus countries worldwide, touching thousands of golfers each year. Past winners include Major Champions Tseng Ya-ni and Rory McIlroy, who took his tally of professional Major titles to four with his wins at the 2014 Open Championship and US PGA Championship.
