Ngo completes Faldo Series hat-trick in Vietnam
6 August 2012: Ngo Bao Nghi won her third Faldo Series Vietnam Championship with a four-shot victory at Ocean Dunes Golf Club in Phan Thiet. The 19-year-old female star was one of four Vietnamese golfers to qualify for the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China.
Ngo from Vung Tau carded rounds of 75 and 73 on the award-winning Faldo Design course to finish four ahead of Boys’ Under-21 winner Do Le Gia Dat. Ngo and Do qualify for the seventh Asia Grand Final which Sir Nick Faldo will host at Mission Hills Golf Club next March.
The pair will be joined at the World Amateur Golf Ranking event in Shenzhen by Truong Chi Quan, who topped the Boys’ Under-16 division, and Girls’ Under-16 winner Tran Chieu Duong.
Beginners from the local community also attended the fifth Faldo Series event as part of a grass-roots coaching programme launched by Ocean Dunes at the inaugural championship in 2008. The programme’s success has enabled some of those children to return in subsequent years as competitors.
Located 200 kilometres northeast of Ho Chi Minh City in the coastal town of Phan Thiet, the Faldo Design layout at Ocean Dunes is often voted one of the country’s best golf courses. The 148-yard ninth hole on the links-style course has been ranked the ‘Best Par-3 Hole in Vietnam’ and one of the ‘Best 500 Holes in the World’.
Established in 1996, 38 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 28 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
The 2012/2013 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 18 tournaments in 15 countries, including four in mainland China and others in The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Singapore, Brunei, Cambodia, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Malaysia, Japan, Indonesia and Thailand.
The Faldo Series Asia is supported by major partners ISPS, Mission Hills and The R&A, official golf wear partner UFL and official suppliers TaylorMade and Tricor. It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation.
