Juniors from twenty-three countries tee it up in inaugural Major Champions Invitational

ORLANDO, FLA. (March 12, 2018) – The inaugural Major Champions Invitational hosted by Sir Nick Faldo kicked off today with 81 juniors from 23 countries teeing it up at Bella Collina in Montverde, Florida. 

The Major Champions Invitational will award three prizes after 72 holes of competition; low-scoring male, low-scoring female and low-scoring team. Leading the pack in the male division is 18-year-old Julián Périco Ibaícena (United States), and in the female division is 18-year-old Linn Grant (Sweden), who finished at 8-under-par and 7-under-par, respectively. Ibaícena is playing for Team Daly and Grant is playing as an individual.

Akshay Bhatia (16, United States), a member of Team Nicklaus, sits solo in second place in the male division at 6-under-par. Alyaa Abdulghany (18, United States), also playing as an individual, sits solo in second place in the female division at 4-under-par.

The team representing 2016 U.S. Open Champion Dustin Johnson sits in the lead of the team category with a score of 4-under-par. The team score is comprised of the low three out of four individual scores. Team Johnson is comprised of Isabella Britt (15), Trent Phillips (17), Lauren Stephenson (20) and Grayson Wotnosky (16), all from the United States.

The inaugural junior field played through tough conditions at Bella Collina, fighting heavy rains in the morning and strong winds throughout the rest of the day. Following the round, a Q&A session featuring major champions Sir Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin, Nancy Lopez and Jerry Pate was held for the participants. The session was emceed by PGA TOUR pro and NBC Golf analyst Peter Jacobsen. Jacobsen also acted as first tee announcer for the inaugural event’s first round.

Round two tee-times begin at 8:00 AM on Tuesday, March 13 at Bella Collina.

The Major Champions Invitational is a tournament created by World Golf Hall of Fame member and six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo. An extension of the Faldo series, the event provides major champions an opportunity to mentor and inspire the next generation of players while giving back to the game.
