Joint winners Horikawa and Seki secure Grand Final spots in Japan
10 December 2013: Mikumu Horikawa and Shota Seki were crowned joint winners of the sixth Faldo Series Japan Championship in Ibaraki on Sunday. Both players posted four-under-par totals of 212, four better than their nearest challenger in a field of 152 golfers.
21-year-old Horikawa completed a wire to wire victory in the Boys’ Under-21 division to set up a fourth Asia Grand Final appearance, whilst Seki, who also led his age category from start to finish, will make his debut at Mission Hills Golf Club in China next March.
Joining Horikawa and Seki for the eighth edition of the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final will be Reo Hiruta, who topped the Boys’ Under-18 division and the winners of the Girls’ Under-21 and Under-16 divisions; Shina Kanazawa and Minami Hiruta.
The five winners will be striving to emulate the recent successes of compatriots Masamichi Ito and Mai Arai when they line up at the Grand Final in Shenzhen. Ito and Arai completed a unique double for Japan when they won the Boys’ and Girls’ titles in 2012 at the World Amateur Golf Ranking event, which is hosted Sir Nick Faldo.
Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
In September 2014, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.
The 2013/2014 Faldo Series Asia schedule features a record 19 tournaments in 15 countries, including four in mainland China, two in India and others in The Philippines, Chinese Taipei, Cambodia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal, Singapore, Brunei, Japan, Pakistan, Indonesia and Thailand. The season will conclude in March 2014 when Faldo hosts the eighth Faldo Series Asia Grand Final at Mission Hills Golf Club in China.
The Faldo Series Asia is supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and Mission Hills. It is endorsed by the Asian Tour and the Asia Pacific Golf Federation.
