Back-to-back Trentham titles for Farrell
30 May 2013: Oliver Farrell completed a superb double by winning the Faldo Series UK Championship at Trentham Golf Club for the second year in a row. The 16-year-old added a 73 to his brilliant opening round of 68 to retain the title he won in Staffordshire, England 12 months ago.
“It feels great to win at Trentham again which is a course that really suits my eye,” said Farrell of Evesham Golf Club who finished on three under par to win by one from Jamie Dick. “I’m really looking forward to meeting Sir Nick again and I want to win the Grand Final this time.”
Joining Farrell at the 17th Faldo Series Grand Final will be Patrick Gaunt of Drayton Park, who shot two level-par rounds of 72 to finish third overall and top the Boys’ Under-21 division, and Oliver Clarke from Formby (Boys’ Under-16).
The two leading girls will also head to the World Amateur Golf Ranking event, including another former finalist, Natasha Fear from La Sella (Girls’ Under-16) and Trentham’s own Emily Coleman (Girls’ Under-21).
Earlier on in the week local juniors enjoyed a free clinic and one-on-one tuition with Faldo’s personal coach Keith Wood at Trentham, part of a joint drive with The R&A to help grow golf at the grass-roots level in the UK.
Supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and the European Tour, the 2013 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 14 countries including six in England plus others in Ireland, Abu Dhabi, Chile, the Czech Republic, Scotland, Austria, Wales, Brazil, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany, Slovakia and Greece.
Established in 1996, 40 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 30 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year. Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
In September 2014, Faldo will begin taking students at a full-time residential academy for education and golf development in America. The first ever Faldo Series Academy in Casa Grande, Arizona is also home to the Faldo Series USA and marks the next significant step in the programme’s history.
