23 July 2012: Juan Alvarez from Uruguay successfully defended his Faldo Series South America title with a one-shot win at Brasilia Golf Club in Brazil.  19-year-old Alvarez will return to the Faldo Series Europe Grand Final in Northern Ireland and will be joined by qualifiers from Brazil and Chile.

Defending champion Alvarez carded a final-round 71 to finish on level par over 54 holes, one shot ahead of Argentina’s Joaquim Bonjour and Gustavo Silva of Chile.  Alvarez now heads to Lough Erne Resort in Northern Ireland for the sixteenth Grand Final, to be hosted by Sir Nick Faldo on September 11-13.

The Brazilian pair of Joao Paulo Carlos da Silva (Boys’ Under-18) and Pedro Junqueira (Boys’ Under-16) claimed their age-group to qualify for the 2012 Grand Final in September.  Chile will also be represented at Lough Erne following age-group wins for Carla Jane (Girls’ Under-21) and Valentina Haupt (Girls’ Under-16).

A total of 75 golfers competed in the fifth South America Championship, hosted by the Brazilian Golf Confederation in a partnership with the Faldo Series through to 2016.  Younger children from the capital city of Brasilia also attended the event to watch the action and enjoy an introduction to golf.

Supported by The R&A, the European Tour and Lough Erne Resort, the 2012 Faldo Series Europe schedule features a record 20 tournaments in 14 countries including six in England plus others in Bahrain, Ireland, Chile, the Czech Republic, Greece, Wales, Austria, Brazil, Germany, The Netherlands, Scotland, Slovakia and Russia.

Established in 1996, 38 Faldo Series tournaments now take place in 28 countries worldwide with more than 7,000 golfers participating each year.  Past winners include Major Champions Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.
