Alvarez takes the honours at inaugural Colombia Championship
5th December 2014: Felipe Alvarez blew away the field to win the inaugural Faldo Series Colombia Championship at Club Campestre La Sabana. The 16-year-old took a sizeable lead in to day two after an inspired 68. He remained composed as he closed with a final round 73 to secure his five-shot victory. Alvarez’s closest threat was Oscar Hernandez, whose two rounds of 73 claimed the Under 18 category by four shots.
Both Alvarez (Militar) and Hernandez (La Florida) can now look forward to making their debuts at the 2015 South America Championship in Brazil. They will be joined by Girls’ Under-21 winner Jennifer Ayala (Caramel Club) and Girls’ Under-16 Champion Maria Jose Bohorquez (Pueblo Viejo).
The president of the Interclub Golf Committee, Aixa Ulloa commented: "It is a privilege and an honour to host an event of this magnitude. Sir Nick Faldo has provided great opportunities for junior golfers around the world and we're really happy that Colombia is in the eye of such an important player. Undoubtedly, we saw the best of our golf together at Club La Sabana".
The age group winners in Colombia will now be able to test themselves against some of the best young players on the continent at the 2015 South America Championship. The tournament also offers an opportunity to qualify for the prestigious Faldo Series Grand Final.
Supported by The R&A, ISPS Handa and The European Tour the 2015 Faldo Series Europe schedule features 16 tournaments in 14 countries including three in England plus others in Colombia, Abu Dhabi, Ireland, Wales, Brazil, Scotland, Czech Republic, Italy, Austria, Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Slovakia and the USA.
